These icons are essential to turn social media traffic into repeat visitors.  RSS icons should be placed prominently on your site so users can easily subscribe to your content.  Many times site specific RSS icons can help you gain additional followers.

An optimal position for RSS-icons is the area that surrounds your logo and the top area of your site. The lower an RSS-icon is placed, the less subscribers you’ll be able to get. Also of interest, should RSS buttons be modified? And if so what works and what hurts?

  1. Missy says:

You should add one of the above buttons to this blog. I was wanting to submit it to Sphinn, and alas no (submit to social media sites) button found. Kind of ironic. LoL.

    Good comprehensive list, Patrick.

  2. Ha – good point Missy. We have had different combinations of buttons throughout the years but have settled on the Digg, Reddit & Delicious buttons (icons) at the bottom of each post :)

  3. Extreme John says:

Great post, I have to thank Mashable for shooting this link around on twitter. Getting ready to edit now, thank you.

  4. Todd Heim says:

    Excellent list!

I've been putting sharethis on blogs for the reporting and customization. My intention is to use the reports to eventually narrow it down to the a few most successful (more optimized) buttons.

I'm going to bookmark this list! Thanks!

Great resources in this post. I think I will settle with combination badges, as many social media sites as possible but the challenge is still how to get your neutral visitors to submit your content in the first place.
