Did you ever look at your overwhelming stream of tweets and think “boy, I really should follow more people?” We didn’t think so – honestly I collect people to follow and then forget why I clicked on them in the first place or wonder who in the world has enough time to read every tweet in the Twitter river (Twiver).
I jest – we’re all obsessively in search of new gems to follow in order to maintain ourselves “in-the-know” and share interesting tweets with our followers.
In comes a brand new Twitter feature (Tweature!). Starting today, Twitter will extend a hand by offering tailored suggestions of whom to follow. Here is what it looks like on my homepage:
And here is a screenshot of the full Suggestions tab:
According to the Twitter blog, “the suggestions are based on several factors, including people you follow and the people they follow. You’ll see these suggestions on Twitter.com and the Find People section.”
There will also be suggestions waiting for you on other people’s profile pages. The rationale behind this is that if you’re interested in this user, they can show you others you could be interested in as well.
And it won’t stop there. Twitter has announced that this feature will soon be made available for developers too. “We will be launching an API so third parties can provide these suggestion features in your favorite desktop, mobile, and web applications.”
What do you think of this new feature? Useful? Redundant? Will it present dead people to follow as Facebook has done recently?
Oh and here’s a suggestion from our very own algorithm – Follow us on Twitter!

That is really cool. I mean, most of us do not like to be told what to do but this could definitely come in handy as it is difficult sometimes to tell if you should follow someone or not. HootSuite just added some ratings that can help you tell how authoritative a person is overall on Twitter but this definitely steps it up a few notches.
Thanks for the comment Miguel -
It’s definitely useful to see how “authoritative” a person is when deciding whether or not to follow. Moreover, there are several sites dedicated to organizing Twitter users by topics and showcasing other people’s lists (such as Listorious or wefollow.com). But how many times do we have to check those sites for updates? How long must we spend there each time?
What this feature really does is show 1-2 options “in your face,” regularly, so you don’t have to take that extra step. If the suggestion is good, it’s too easy and tempting NOT to click.
So, like you said, it definitely takes it up a notch.
But my twitter account doesn’t show ” Suggestions for you ” section… Is that feature will be automatically displayed in my account or its a manual process ???
Shuresh,
This will be automatic but for some reason the new feature does not yet appear on everyone’s accounts. Hold on tight and you should see it soon!

Hmmm…. It isn’t present on my account either. I currently have “Find On Twitter | Browse Interests | Find Friends | Invite By Email” but not the “Suggestions for You” tab.

Why doesn’t Facebook and Twitter just truly mash together and be one big ass social site..lol
this is an excellent point…maybe one day
There is nothing like that on my account. Why? And when will it be available for me?
Manohar,
It is unclear why this feature has only been rolled out for some of the accounts – Twitter hasn’t stated anything with regards to this. I expect everyone will see it within the next few days.
Gina, good coverage of this new feature! I started seeing it Friday (I think). I’m curious to know why it took so long!
Thank you Ed! Agreed about the delay, now let’s wait to see how well it works…
Honestly, I find the suggestions on Twitter (which they have chosen to call the grammatically incorrect “Who to Know”) annoying. It is simply a box on my sidebar which I will never use, and one that forces me to scroll down in order to see my lists and the trending topics. I wish they would remove it or at least let us hide it!
Nora – you’re definitely not alone in feeling that way : ) Hopefully they’ll start making suggestions more relevant with time and even make it collapsible!
Thanks for your comment and we hope to see you here again.

yah i agree with you.
I find it annoying. I wish Twitter would allow users to switch the feature on/off.
