How Can Lawyers Use Twitter?

On Monday, I did a presentation at LegalTech on a panel called “What is Twitter and How Can I Use It?” along with Kevin O’Keefe & Matthew Homann.  As you can probably tell from the name of the conference, this session was aimed at informing lawyers (and people in the legal profession) on how they could effectively use Twitter.  Here’s my entire PowerPoint presentation:

As I have done in the past with another Twitter presentation, I called on users of Twitter to actually show how Twitter works.  By asking these three questions, I got over 135 responses in ~30 minutes:

  • How would you explain Twitter (in 140 characters or less)?
  • What is your *one* MUST have Twitter tool?
  • How could a lawyer or someone in the legal field use Twitter effectively?

The answers that I received were all excellent and I’d like to thank the following folks for their help:

Jfavreau, LisaBarone, stuntdubl, MarkMayhew, RyanCaldwell, kennyhyder, RuudHein, davidmihm, maxchirkov, brianchappell, kid_disco, robwatts, szetela, aldorella, danperry, toddmintz, MichelleRobbins, amabaie, gregfinn, dedmond29, Franco_F, 1KrazyKorean, sizzler_chetan, JoannaLord, groovemonkey, shoemoney, timstaines, JadedTLC, lornali, rabeidoh, factive, MattMcGee, jeredh, hol_kinz, saffyre9, leeodden, LukaIsntLuka, sizzler_chetan, samiwasnt, PatrickPete, Rhea, ImprovingTheWeb, MelWebster, cloudspark, Frozen2Late, mediamanx, timstaines, ayb, tonyadam, remarkablogger, webconnoisseur, brianchappell, Matt_Siltala, nicholashomh, Franco_F, LornaHarris, dedmond29, darkbulb, netmeg, bendunn, danperry, johnfairley, RyanCaldwell,  TheOtherJeff, GregBoser, ElijahIgnatieff, robwatts, timstaines, maxchirkov, inflatemouse, DavidWallace, jdevalk, AussieWebmaster, DavidBrim, matthewdiehl, Jfavreau, caroladam, danperry, connectionshk, SearchBuzz, matt_mcgowan, dallasdesign, Pamela_Lund, yummyman, branflakez & Ragnell.

  8. Chris, that was quite an interesting presentation, and I have to admit that having twitter itself illustrate it's effectiveness was quite witty. I would love to actually see some real world numbers on conversion of tweeting to money in a lawyers pocket…but I suppose that is just impossible at this point in the game. You get out what you put into it right. : )
    Good post.

Thanks for sharing the valuable information. Using services of twitters will certainly reduce the working stresses of lawyers. Yes, the results will depend upon the proper use for justified purposes.

Your presentation for lawyers and others in the legal profession is great and convincing. Maybe, it would wake up some folks who have been sleeping. I just hope every lawyer sees this.

  11. But Chris, what value twitter is going to add to the lawyers? I loved your presentation, its truly professional.

  12. Use of twitters in legal affairs will speed up the procession pace and people will get the verdicts soon. But on parallel, I doubt about reliability also.

  13. I haven't had the pleasure of using Twitter, but I see that there are a lot of people making use of this new concept. Interesting post, made me understand it a lot more.

  15. The information you have posted here is hard to find for law and I am pretty much pleased from your Blog

This blog provides so much quality information on getting things right. Not sure how we ever coped before the age of social networking.

  17. Chris, the slideshow was brilliant getting feedback from people who follow you. I believe attorneys need to start participating to understand how to connect to their clients/potential clients. Lawyers have so much knowledge they can Tweet and then brand themselves as experts/authorities in their particular book of business. That is how they can use Twitter.

  18. Treats says:

I knew for along time that legal professionals can and do benefit from using Twitter and other social media sites.

  23. Rave says:

Nicely put together! Twitter is beneficial for every profession, and not just lawyers. Getting to know more people through networking can really make a lawyer very influential in the social circle and beyond.

  25. What you could do is try the more popular sites like Facebook and Twitter first. If that does not produce any results then you could move on to the smaller sites.
