Last week I gave a presentation at SES NY and included a list of 35 niche social media sites that we participate in regularly. Lots of people have asked me for this list so I decided to put it here. The following 35 sites are broken down into 8 different categories and each site has an active community and can help you get exposure. These sites aren’t going to send you 50,000 visitors but they will send you targeted traffic & links (if you’re content is good).

Given that Digg appears determined to dig a hole for itself by now making sure no links go directly to a story I suspect that more and more people will be looking at your very useful list.
Hopefully, the people and companies listed won't get to the point Digg are at where they're so pleased with themselves they've forgotten that Social Media sites are based on sharing not thinking you're more important than everybody else.

For my 2 cents I'd say that something is better than nothing and gaining exposure in niche markets is a solid strategy. But since 'bandwidth' is an issue for so many companies in marketing it's important to look for a good balance between the amount of effort needed to be effective in a social media site and the benefits to your website and bottom line.

Great list – I'm convinced that all the new sites in relation to Twitter will have an impact on many niches also. To get the full potential of niche sites, you would have to look at each local market also. Here you will often find even more specialized niche sites.
